At Bessacarr Primary we aim to provide the children with an inspiring and exciting curriculum full of opportunities to be creative, inquisitive and think like historians.
We aim to provide a history curriculum with well-planned, substantive knowledge- including a coherent sense of choronology- at the heart of it. Embedded within our curriculum are 5 key substantive concepts which allow children to transfer their learning to different contexts to enable them to develop new historical knowledge more easily. These substantive concepts are:
-Technology and Engineering
Through following the Ark framework, we ensure our curriculum is ambitious and covers all of the objectives set out in the National Curriculum to provide children with suitable challenge and depth. Children have regular opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. This is acheived through regularly planned opportunities to develop knowledge of historical concepts (eg: causation, change and continuity, historical significance and sources and evidence).
In our history lessons, we want children to develop a sense of belonging and an understanding of how the past has affected us, our local community, other places in our country and further afield. Through studying the past, children will learn to appreciate and respect how past events have shaped our lives today, the diversities of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. We seek to inspire children’s curiosity about the world in which they live and their place in it.

Year 4- The Mayans, Roman Invasions, Roman Britain
Year 5- Scots, Anglo Saxons and Vikings, Ancient Egyptians
Year 6- The Industrial Revolution, World War 1 and World War 2, Making our Mark (Justice throughout History)
